PROJECT: UTM – New Science Building

The project involves the construction of a 165,000-square-foot facility to support several academic groups including the Centre for Medicinal Chemistry, researchers from the Department of Biology and the Department of Chemical and Physical Sciences and the university’s acclaimed Forensic Science Program.

This new facility will also be the home of the Novo Nordisk Network for Healthy Populations, a high-performance computation data centre
and spaces for Facilities Management and Planning.

Net Electric in partnership with Walsh Group was responsible for the supply and installation of all electrical systems; indoor and out, lighting, emergency generator system, UPS network, life safety and security systems.

Net Electric’s scope also included the structured cabling, pathways, data centre hardware, wireless system and redundant network backbone system.

PROJECT: TRCA – New Sustainable Office

The $65-million project for the Toronto Regional Conservation Authority is situated on the edge of the Black Creek Ravine in the Jane and Finch neighbourhood. A structure was made almost entirely out of wood and is billed as one of the most sustainable mid-rise office buildings in North America presented challenges not found in structures of conventional construction.
The four-storey mass-timber office building will act as a living laboratory for developers, professionals, researchers,
and students, over 400 TRCA staff and provide development planning and permitting services for TRCA’s regulated areas
Net Electric in partnership with Eastern Construction was responsible for the supply and installation of all electrical systems; indoor and out, lighting, emergency generator system, fire alarm, shade control, CCTV and security systems. Included as well, were structured cabling, pathways, data centre hardware, wireless system and a redundant network backbone system.

PROJECT: Hydro One Operations Centre, Orillia

The project involved the construction of a new 120,000+ square foot, $150 million dollar Ontario grid control centre in Orillia called the Integrated Systems Operations Centre (ISOC). The state-of-the art facility boasts a new Primary Ontario Grid Control Centre, a provincial warehouse, and a regional Operations Centre that which functions 24/7 to provide reliable electricity across the province.

In conjunction with Ellis Don and Symtech Innovations, Net Electric was responsible for the entire Data Centre, Carrier Rooms, Emergency Power Management System and Office structured cabling platform which included all server and network equipment cabinets and racks, specialty power distribution units, fibreoptic raceways, underfloor cable supports, inter-cabinet and inter-room backbone and horizontal cabling – both optical fibre and Cat6a.All fibre cabling was either pre-terminated MPO-style or was fusion.

The University of Toronto Chestnut Residence and Conference Center is a positive space celebrating the diversity of the surrounding community, students, and staff. This facility provides residence for students as well as public accommodation options during the summer season. The conference center services the university and the public and includes a variety of audio-visual options, food and beverage alternatives, parking, and a wide range of rooms and suites to accommodate any size of gathering.

Net Electric was responsible for the design of cable plant retrofit, Complete fibre optic & copper structured cable solution, and active residence during the entire project.

Net electric consulted with the University of Toronto for the wireless design and installation

PROJECT: OCAD University Fabrication Studios Renovations, Toronto

Located in the heart of downtown Toronto, OCAD University is Canada’s largest art and design university. The university boasts a Creative City Campus which provides students with technology-enabled, studio-based and experimental learning programs.

The Fabrication Studios expansion was initiated to renovate existing studios, provide new equipment and technology, and improve energy efficiency to the building systems.

Net Electric Limited, in partnership with Morphosis and Eastern Construction, was responsible for upgrading levels 1 and 4 of the existing system. Upgrades were made to power distribution, lighting and fire alarm systems.

In addition, Net Electric Limited is a PANDUIT ® Certified Installer. Using our qualification, a PANDUIT® CAT 6 network system was installed on this project.

OCAD University Fabrication Studio Renovations

PROJECT: University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine – MSB Lab & Support Room Renovations

project details
In 2016, the federal and provincial governments provided almost $190 million dollars over two years to the research labs at the University of Toronto. The president of the university at the time quoted that the funding was, “a historic investment in Canadian science and innovation”. The Medical Science Building (MSB) laboratories retrofit project was one result of the funding.

The project included major renovations of laboratories in the research tower and anatomy laboratories.

Net Electric Limited, in partnership with WSP and Eastern Construction, was responsible for installing the power supplies for the condenser units, AC units, exhaust fans. In addition, Net Electric supplied and installed the power distribution system, light fixtures, switchboard, and large 750kW gas generator.

Net Electric also supplied and installed the communication systems and REES monitoring system for the fridges, coolers and incubators in the laboratories.

PROJECT: Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) – Dr. E. Jackman Institute of Child Study Expansion

Dr. Eric Jackman donated $5 million to the Institute of Child Study, the largest given in Canada for early development and childhood education. In recognition, the University of Toronto undertook expansion and renovation of its 85-year old building.

The expansion project spans over 3 floors and features a large pavilion, gym and auditorium. In addition to being a research-based teaching establishment, the institute provides community outreach programs in literacy and parenting.

Net Electric Limited, in partnership with the University of Toronto and Buttcon Limited, was responsible for the supply and installation of the security, AV, CCTV and communications systems.

Net Electric also supplied and installed the switchboard panels, decorative lighting fixtures, electrical outlets, and fire alarm systems.

Project Overview

PROJECT: Century Gardens Recreation Centre

OWNER: Corporation of the City of Brampton

Century Gardens is a recreational facility offering over 300 recreation programs to patrons. Located in the city of Brampton, Ontario, the facility boasts features such as soccer fields, aerobic studio, fitness centre, snack bar, steam room, auditorium, high capacity pool, two high capacity multipurpose rooms and two full-size arenas.

The project consisted of several components that doubled the overall size of the centre. Some of the highlights
are a new full-size ice rink as well as the refurbishment of the existing rink, the renovation of the pool and lobby area and a new entrance and lobby.

Net Electric secured the electrical contract with PCL Constructors and was responsible for providing the distribution system, lighting system, fire alarm system, P/A system, audio-video system and extensive communication cabling systems.

PROJECT: St. John’s Rehab Hospital, Toronto

St. John’s Rehab Hospital is located at 285 Cummer Av. Toronto and is the only hospital in Ontario solely dedicated to rehabilitation. The institution strives to help people return to active productive lives and can accommodate 160 beds.

Percon Construction subcontracted Net Electric to demolish and upgrade the building distribution system to allow for the upcoming 49,000 sq, ft expansion.

The upgraded distribution system included new switchboards, splitters, transformers, disconnects and feeders. The parties worked together to adhere to project specifications and meet the demanding timelines, all the time being mindful of the budget.

PROJECT: York Region Administrative Centre, Newmarket

The York Administrative Centre is home to the Regional Municipality of York operations which oversees nine municipalities and provides services to over 1,000,000 people, 29,000 businesses and 4,950 employees. The four-story 400,000 sq/ft complex is easily identifiable by its four-leaf clover shape and sweeping architectural contours designed by world-renowned architect Cardinal. The complex features a four-story counsel chamber and clock.

Net Electric worked closely with Milne & Nicholas Limited to adhere to project deadlines and specifications. Net Electric was responsible for installing the lighting systems, distribution system, voice and data communications cabling, fire alarm system, generator system, security system, clock tower power and lighting, and a UPS system that also operates for the York Regional Police Headquarters and provisions for the 911 emergency response communications system.
